Crew Member

Starting Wage: $10/hr
A first step employee. This employee is the driving force in removing brush and clearing land. A crew member is one of several employees who support sawyer, chipping and mowing operations. They are the back-bone of the organization.

Duties:

  • Work: Chipping, brush handling, hand-line construction, hand mowing, swamping, raking, loading of brush onto trucks or trailers and simple tool maintenance
  • Utilize hand tools
  • Hand tool maintenance
  • Power tools: Limited to mowers, weed eaters and chainsaws
  • No supervisory responsibility - subordinate to all supervisors
  • Report personnel injuries to supervisors
  • Report unsafe acts to supervisor

Responsibilities:

  • Maintain weed eaters and other motorized equipment
  • Maintain and service all hand tools
  • Report unsafe work practices to Crew Boss
  • Report all injuries immediately to Crew Boss
  • Work safe and within the safety practices that you have been trained to
  • Direct traffic and post as a look out in hazardous situations
  • Pick up and return all equipment at the end of the work day
  • Conduct a final walk-over of the work area ensuring all equipment and brush has been removed

Crew Boss

Position attained through certification and promotion only

The crew boss is the line supervisor for all operations in the field. The crew boss carries out orders from the Manager and disseminates those orders to the crew members. The crew boss(s) are the only employees who are allowed to fall trees or cut brush with the exception of fully trained and experienced crew members who have been checked off to perform as a Sawyer. While conducting brush removal operations they will be the sawyer(s) who will have direct control and communications with the crew members or swampers. Safety in the work environment is their number 1 responsibility.

Duties:

  • Work: Chipping, small tree thinning, brush handling, weed eating, general sawyer, onsite manager when Manager is unavailable or not on site.
  • Line supervisor while manager is unavailable
  • Assign tasks and ensure their completion
  • Perform maintenance and repairs on chainsaw and other power tools
  • Conduct safety briefing
  • Daily activity reporting and timekeeping
  • Assure safety policies are adhered to
  • Operate vehicles
  • Utilize hand tools
  • Hand tool maintenance
  • Operate and service power tools
  • Report personnel injuries to Manager
  • Report unsafe acts
  • Keep all employees on task
  • Order breaks for employees based upon weather, terrain and duration or work that day (Water break is 10 or less minutes. Safety brake is 15-20 minutes and is required if the above factors dictate. Lunch break is 1 hour.)

Responsibilities:

  • All Company Equipment
  • Supervision of onsite crewmembers
  • Communication with crewmembers
  • Responsible for onsite employees and their assignments
  • Enforces all policies and procedures
